Long hours, heavy lifting, tight spaces and unpredictable weather can add up if you’re not looking after yourself properly. That’s why we’ve put together a reminder to keep you feeling stronger, moving better and staying switched on for the day ahead.

Staying active in the morning

Start your day with a few minutes of dynamic stretching such as:

  • arm circles
  • leg swings
  • hip openers

These simple exercises will get the blood flowing, loosen up your joints and lower risk of on-site injuries.

Staying active in the afternoon
The same applies after the working day, try some static stretches such as:

  • touching your toes to stretch your hamstrings
  • holding a quad stretch to release tightness in your thighs

Hold the positions for 20-30 seconds, this will ease muscle stiffness and improve your flexibility over time.

Preventing avoidable injuries
Most injuries aren’t caused by one big accident but from long-term bad habits.

  • Lift properly
We know you know, but this is your reminder to keep your back straight and lift with your legs. Avoid twisting while carrying weight and take a second to plan your movement before picking anything up.
  • Use the right gear
Your knee pads, gloves, back support and safety harnesses should be used because, well, accidents happen. Using them protects joints, reduces strain and keeps you working safely for the long run.

Eating and drinking well
Feeling lacklustre and uncomfortable? It’s likely you need either nutrition or hydration.

  • Pack your lunch
Bring a balanced meal with protein, whole grains, fruit and vegetables to keep your energy levels steady and to prevent your sugar levels from spiking.

  • Pack your water bottle
Keep a reusable water bottle on you to sip throughout the day so you don’t end up with headaches or muscle cramps.

Support keeps you going
Mental health is just as important as your physical health, especially with demanding, hands-on jobs. Taking short breaks during the day, even just 10 minutes away from the tools and noise, can reset your focus. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, talk to a teammate.

  • Stay connected
Having a support system on site or within your network can make a big difference.

Looking after your body and mind helps you work better and avoid injuries. Small habits make a big difference. Stay safe and let the work continue!
